The Southern African Center for Cooperation in Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Training (SACCAR) and the University of Pretoria invite applications for admission into the M.Sc. programme in Food Science and Technology at the University of Pretoria. The programme is jointly presented by the University of Pretoria and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Admission Requirements

Admission into the programme requires a good (60% or higher) B.Sc. degree, preferably in Food Science or a related subject. Preference will be given to students who have relevant experience. Students must have completed suitable courses in biological statistics, otherwise such courses will be prescribed.

Please note that non-South African students must be in possession of a study permit before they can commence their studies in South Africa. Permits are obtainable from South African Embassies/High Commissions in the country of the student's citizenship. It is essential to apply for the study permit in good time as it can take up to 3 months to be processed.

Programme details

The programme comprises a minimum of two years full-time study. In the case of students who have neither formal training nor experience in Food Science and Technology, it is probable that three years full-time study will be required.

In the first year courses are offered in the basic elements of Food Science and Technology. Some of the courses offered include animal and plant food technologies, food process design, sensory evaluation, food product development, quality control and assurance, cereal science and technology, dairy technology, fermented food products, fruit and vegetable technology and meat technology. In year 2 students are required to take a course in research methodology and complete a supervised research project in Food Science and Technology.
