Some of the tasks which I can perform for you

Technical and Scientific Communications

This is the new name which covers the creation and editing of both paper and electronic material of a technical nature. In the world of non-technical publishing and journalism, there is still a strong tendency to separate writing, proofreading, copyediting and content editing into different tasks, often undertaken by different people. Authors and editors of technical material have always overlapped in function and made heavier use of electronic processing, and now a lot of the content is published for viewing by computer - on CD, on a public server for access over the World Wide Web, or on a private server for intranet access.

As a long-serving developer and product planner in the IT industry, I have spent a large part of my life writing technical material, some of it for multi-million dollar projects. Here are some examples:

  • Objectives
  • Functional Specifications
  • Test Plans
  • Documents of Understanding
  • Third Party Development Contracts
  • Service Level Agreements
  • Patent Disclosures
  • Marketing Brochures
  • Project Reports
  • Diagnostic Manuals
  • User Manuals

Web Sites

This is a much newer discipline, but all the old rules apply. There are new ways of getting your point across, but they are not solutions in themselves. I can take on the whole job, or just provide the skills you do not have in-house:

  • Define objectives for a Web site, after analysing your business processes
  • Create and commission your site
  • Update and maintain your site
  • Provide editing and guidance for your in-house staff

Data Gathering and Analysis

A lot of projects, whether they are performed by donor groups in Africa and other parts of the world or by quality management teams in business or government, depend on establishing a baseline and measuring the effect of the resources devoted to changing the current state of affairs.

During my career as a product planner, I have collected, analysed and presented data from a multitude of different sources. I have also taken part in process analysis with a view to improving the effectiveness of departments, in a number of different contexts, so I can offer services at many levels. For instance, I can:

  • Collect demographic and other data
  • Create and maintain a searchable database
  • Produce written status and trends reports
  • Make live presentations about the data
  • Highlight weaknesses in your business processes
  • Recommend actions to make your business processes more effective
  • Help to remove causes of customer dissatisfaction
