HISTORY

In the 1980's the idea of MAITISONG grew out of Maru a Pula School's need for a hall. The school has a policy of reaching out to the community and so it was decided that such a hall should be made available to the community as, at that time, there were no halls in Gaborone capable of housing professional performances. The Principal of the school at that time, DAVID MATTHEWS, and the Deputy Principal, JOHN O'BRIEN, and the architect, IAN MARSHALL, conceived the idea of a multi-purpose theatre. Money was raised, principally in the U.S.A. by the American Friends of Maru a Pula, and building started in 1986. By the beginning of 1987 the building was finished and on the 21 March it was officially opened.

Throughout March and April of that year there was the MAITISONG OPENING FESTIVAL that introduced the new theatre to the public of Gaborone. Since then there has been a Maitisong Festival at the end of March each year.

DAVID SLATER was appointed as the first director in 1986.
