Student
Discipline
My staff remains
committed to assuring that the highest standards
of discipline are maintained, which is key to
success. To meet this challenge we continue to
implement a policy of “zero tolerance” meaning
quite simply that for every known infraction the
administration will take appropriate action.
With the additional disciplinary measures, a
revised disciplinary code of conduct and the
implementation of the “ Good Conduct
Competition”, we are succeeding in making
further improvements in the general behaviour of
our students. We also recognize that improving
discipline in the school is a continuous process
and there is no let up in our effort to achieve
total discipline. In this respect we acknowledge
the role of our Guidance and Counseling
Department in helping our students to develop
self-discipline and self-confidence and also to
overcome some social problems.
Moral
Education Campaign
We recognize that
our youth are growing up in challenging times.
It is therefore not enough that they should just
be empowered by academic knowledge. They also
need to be armed with the ability to make
informed decisions on important life issues. In
this context, Legae over the past two years has
put greater emphasis on an enhanced Moral
Education Programme. Our Guidance and
Counselling Department has organized a number of
programmes aiming to enlighten our students on
various issues, affecting them. Blossom
Counselling Centre gave a presentation to the
whole school in different sessions. The topics
covered in these presentations were, eating
disorders and the sensitive issue of self-harm.
Recently a number of Form Five girls were taken
to the Village Magistrate’s Court to observe the
administration of justice. A dance troop from
Zimbabwe visited our school to make a song and
dance presentation on the topic of cultural
values.

Subject
Demand and Class Size
As was noted in my
last report, trends within the school, which
parallel those in other public and private
institutions, show an increasing demand on the
part of students to take courses in the
Sciences, Business Studies, Accounts and
Computers. In the context of rising overall
enrolment and the necessity in IGCSE and A-level
teaching for more practical work, this increased
demand has put enormous pressure on our existing
human and material resources. In this context
the completion of the new classroom block is a
godsend.

A-Level Programme
Our newly
introduced A –level Programme is on course. Our
pioneer batch is being prepared by a team of
well-experienced and specially trained teachers.
With the help of our systematic monthly
assessments their academic progress is
constantly monitored. Also a monthly A – level
News Forum publishes the level of achievements,
each student has made so far. These publications
also provide students with some vital
information about their further studies and
career options.

Infrastructure
In keeping with
the commitment to the highest academic
standards, I am pleased to report that the new
two-storied classroom block is almost ready for
use. Our Science Department is strengthened with
an additional Lab. Room 14 has been redesigned
and converted into a well-furnished Physics
Laboratory. With this enhanced facility our
students are now using six labs to develop their
practical skills in Science subjects.

Cummunity Service |

This past
term the school, through its Community
Service Club, coordinated by Mr.
Abraham, donated money as well as
foodstuffs to various charitable
organizations.
I am also very happy to report that the
money, amounting to P10,000.00, realized
by collecting fines from offenders was
donated to the Holy Cross Catholic
Mission AIDS project for the benefit of
300 People living with HIV/AIDS, under
their care, from the villages of
Mogoditshane, Mmopane, Ledumadumane,
Metsimotlhabe and Tsholamosese.

Staffing
Notwithstanding
the considerable increase in student numbers
over the past two years and the introduction of
A-level, we have only adjusted our academic
staffing level modestly. Our teaching staff
currently consists of 40 full-time teachers,
including members of the administration and a
part-time teacher for French. Unlike other
secondary schools in Botswana our full-time
academic staff has a full-time sports master who
does not otherwise teach academic subjects.
Unexpectedly two teachers resigned in the first
term this year for personal reasons. Both of
them were new teachers who were still on
probation, but we were able to hire equally
competent teachers to replace them. The Head of
the Social Science Department Mrs. Sakuringwa
has handed in her resignation letter just last
week. She is one of our senior most teachers and
teaches examination classes including A-level
Geography. Her resignation is evidence of the
recent trend that I mentioned earlier in my
report. We are still trying to find a suitable
replacement for her.

Parent Teachers
Association
It is my hope and
belief that 2006 will see a revival of the PTA.
For my part, I am prepared to do my utmost to
facilitate enhanced PTA activities. The PTA
annual general meeting is scheduled for
Thursday11 May 2006.

Closing Remarks
Finally, I
would like to reiterate that the academic
administration is committed to the overall
progress of this institution. We work hard not
just to maintain standards but constantly to
improve them. |
