Clifton Outreach

Handing over blankets.

Last term we had a craze for knitting. We knitted about 60 blankets - one came all the way from England from Zoe Granville's Great Aunt. Isn't that amazing? The whole Clifton community was involved in this wonderful project.

We handed over half the blankets to Mrs Corker .She gave them to the hospital so the children could go home with warmth and comfort for their families. Next we gave the rest of the blankets to AIDS orphans. They were very pleased with Clifton School. We would like to thank Mrs Daniels for all her hard work and enthusiasm.

The eclipse

Some friends and I went to the pans to see the eclipse.
We went to a place on the pans where there was a lot of water.
Then we saw thousands of flamingos in the water and some
flying around. We were all set up to watch the eclipse then it happened! The moon started to cover the sun and when it
started to look like dusk the flamingos got ready to roost for
the night. Then all of a sudden the water level started to go
down like it had a tide but the pans don't have a tide. So it
ended up being a very exciting trip.

At school we were all watching the eclipse through our special eclipse glasses. The moon started to cover the sun, it began to get darker and it started to get cold. We saw little moon shapes on the ground under a tree. It then started to get warmer and lighter.
I can't wait till the fourth of December 2002 because it is the next eclipse and
Francistown will get one of the best views.

The 2001 Midmar Mile took place in the Natal Midlands on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11th February. A total of 12 000 swimmers participated making it the biggest Midmar event ever. Clifton entered eleven pupils, a very reluctant teacher and several "middle aged" crisis ridden parents - some parents will do anything to get their photo taken!
Clifton was privileged to have one red cap entrant - "ELITE SWIMMER" - who went on to hold off a strong challenge from Lloyd Martin, David Kidd, Shawn Pautz and Mr. Paul Martin - now feeling his age.

Mention must be made of our non-swimming chairman - "MR. G" - who despite being handicapped with his armbands, finished a respectable 33 minutes and 15 seconds.

Anne Harvey had a splendid time trying to encourage her son but found the two kilometre walk along the banks of the Midmar Dam rather strenuous - she had a rather late night the previous evening though.

Special mention must be made of that wonderful piece of technology, the cellphone, which kept our team together and caused great excitement the evening before the race, when a demonstration of its vibrating capabilities was exposed to all.

To all those that participated, well done and a special thanks to Lynn Thomson for her help in organising the event and most importantly to our sponsors who made the whole thing possible.
