Profile

Since Botswana independence in 1966 the establishment of consulting engineering firms was a slow process which gathered momentum during the late 1970's to the present day where over 20 firms now maintain permanent offices mainly in Gaborone.

In 1984 representatives of interested firms suggested the formation of an association and membership criteria was established, constitutional matters were addressed and membership was expanded.

A core of dedicated firms and members persevered through periods of mixed interest and fluctuating membership until mid 1993 when formal registration was approved and the association was finally born after a long period of gestation.

Current membership is over 30 firms with the possibility of new applications in the near future and close contact has been maintained with F.I.D.I.C.

Implementation of the objects of our association is a major task to be undertaken by Council together with the establishment of a communication forum with representatives of the government departments most often serviced by our members. An understanding of the roles to be played by other professional organisations has been recognised by council and closer contact will be developed in the future.

ACEB is represented at GAMA meetings which cater for associations affiliated to F.I.D.I.C. throughout Africa, and regular developments are shared with other associations beyond our borders by way of personal contacts through our member firms who are also represented internationally.

The promotion of independent judgement, high levels of professional expertise, quality management assurance and environmental awareness are issues, amongst others, which must be vigorously pursued as vital aspects of any meaningful awareness campaign for the benefit of our client body and our community of large.

Graduate training schemes are already in place in some member firms and continuing professional development requires particular attention within the confines of our particular business environment.

The promotion of consulting engineering as a professional career will be a subject for discussion during contacts with the institutes of further learning, study of the aims and objectives of the Association signify a comprehensive environment in every fact of development projects as they involve the services of independent consulting engineers.

The Association of Consulting Engineers Botswana must be sensitive to the needs of member firms involved in such work and to the community which ultimately inherits the product of their endeavours.
